Application of aluminium as an alternative to other materials

In a number of cases, MAO technology is successfully used combined with the replacement of the component material. It can solve at once several production tasks:
- decreasing the component weight,
- reducing material expenses
- reducing the cost and machining time,
- and imparting a new quality to the surface.
Tomsk plant «Manotom» was offered to replace the material of the manometer part (bronze) by the aluminium alloy D16T. The testing demonstrated an extension of the operating life of the aluminium alloy component relative to its bronze counterpart. Over 2,2 mln manometer components have been treated during four years of successful cooperation.
 
In the High Current Electronics Institute we changed the gas laser material-stainless steel-to the aluminium alloy D16T, which resulted in the economy on the material and easier machining of workpieces. Laser components with the MAO coating demonstrate a considerably longer operating life under conditions of the rare hydrochloride atmosphere. It should be noted that the material was replaced not only of the laser case (the length of ,050 mm, the diameter of 285 mm and the inner surface area of 85 dm2) but of all inner parts (the size of a single part from 0.05 dm2).
 
The «Center of Precision Machining» was offered to replace brass components of optical instruments by those from aluminium with the black MAO coating. It allows one to achieve an economic effect, gives new consumer qualities to ready products and replace three technological operations of producing a coating by one.
